MOOSEHEART CHILD CITY & SCHOOL is a residential childcare facility, located on a 1,000-acre campus 38 miles west of Chicago. The Child City is a home for children and teens in need, from infancy through high school. Dedicated in July 1913 by the Moose fraternal organization, MOOSEHEART cares for youth whose families are unable, for a wide variety of reasons, to care for them. Some have lost one or both parents; others are living in environments that are simply not conducive to healthy growth and development. Whatever the reason, the men and women of the Moose, through unparalleled generosity and volunteerism, furnish the resources necessary to care for children in need. The Moose fraternity provides children with a wholesome home-like environment and the best possible training and education.

Children live in one of thirty residences designed like a spacious single-family residence. Each is home for six to twelve children. The heart of the program is Family Teachers — providing a consistent, systematic method of care, with emphasis on social-skills development — skills essential for success in later life.

It is Mooseheart’s policy to admit qualified children who have a need. The Admissions Committee considers all applications of children in need.

Nine O'Clock Ceremony

The fraternity’s Nine O’Clock Ceremony was first depicted in oil for distribution to Lodges in the early 1930s, with a Mooseheart child saying a bedtime prayer with the Campanile tower shown outside the window; the painting was updated in the early 1960s, now the House of God is depicted at dusk outside the window. (Ironically, the positioning of both artworks is more idealized than realistic: The tyke at top looks to be about four, hence would have lived at Baby Village, nowhere near the Campanile; in the later art the view is very close to what one might see out a bedroom window in Baby Village’s Schuylkill building—but the boy looks to be perhaps seven—too old to live there!)

Moosehaven, the "City of Contentment"

St. John's River in Orange Park, Florida

Moosehaven is a 70-acre community owned and operated by the Moose organization for its members and their spouses. It is located on the banks of the St. John's River in Orange Park, Florida, 15 miles south of Jacksonville, Florida.

After the 1913 founding of Mooseheart, the Moose organization's famed "Child City" for children in need, the fraternity turned its attention to plans for a home for its dependent retired members. Before Moosehaven was established, a number of elderly persons resided at Mooseheart, for a short period, but this was deemed an unsatisfactory solution.

The Moose originally bought a resort hotel on 26-acres at Orange Park; and, on November 1, 1922, Moosehaven was formally opened. The first 22 residents were those who had been living at Mooseheart. They set up housekeeping in the hotel which had been renamed Aid Hall.

WATER TOWER AT MOOSEHEART

Mooseheart’s Water Tower

The water tower at Mooseheart is like that of many municipalities and meets the same essential needs of supplying water for drinking, bathing, fire protection, and landscape maintenance.

Mooseheart’s 100,000-gallon water tower was constructed in 1967 and is now in need of normal required maintenance. Mooseheart has only one water tower and, as always, performing scheduled maintenance tasks in a timely manner is the most cost-effective method of managing an asset this important to campus life.

Project Background

Following a professional engineering inspection, which included divers inspecting the inside of the tower, specifications and recommendations for the process were developed.

In addition to some minor repairs, current plans include removing the paint from both the interior and exterior followed by the application of a fresh epoxy coating system.

Total projected cost for the project is $222,000 of which the members and co-workers of West Virginia have pledged to raise half of over a two-year period.

The West Virginia Moose Association has two (2) Fraternal Fundraiser Chairmen that have ongoing projects to raise money toward this project. If you would like further information on how you can become involved or would like to make a donation, please contact:

SO About Us

What is a Moose?

A Moose member is a man belonging to the Loyal Order of Moose, or a woman belonging to the Woman of Moose. These members, over 1.6 million strong, make up the two components of the fraternal organization known as Moose International. Their membership is held in any one of 2,100 Lodges and 1,600 chapters throughout the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Bermuda. Moose International headquarters is approximately 38 miles west of Chicago at Mooseheart, Illinois.

Men and Women join the Order for a variety of reasons, including Family Activities, Community Service projects and member sport programs, just to name a few. While these activities offer each Moose member a valid reason to join, the main endeavors of the fraternity remain Mooseheart, the 1,200 - acre Illinois home and school for children in need, and Moose haven, the 63 - acre Florida retirement community for senior members in need. These residents, entrusted to the care and support provided by membership in the Moose, are constant living reminders of the humanitarian efforts of Moose members.
